Esta banda formou-se em 1988 e terminou em 1990 após a morte do seu vocalista Andrew Wood. Foram uma das bandas precursoras do movimento grunge, que se iniciou em Seattle no final da década de 80. Andrew morreu, vítima de uma overdose de heroína. No final desse fatídico ano, Stone Gossard e Jeff Ament resolvem formar uma banda em homenagem ao falecido companheiro. Assim surgiram os Temple of the Dog que tinham como membros o Chris Cornell e o Matt Cameron dos Soundgarden e os desconhecidos Eddie Vedder e Mike McCready (que mais tarde iriam formar os Pearl Jam ao lado de Gossard e Ament).
